Sir Terry Frost

Sir Terry Frost was a English painter and advocate of abstract art born in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire in October 1915. Frost was trained at Camberwell School of Art and St Ives School of Painting where his first solo exhibition was held in 1947. He later exhibited with the St Ives Society of Artists and became a member of the Penrith Society.

His works were influenced by the light, colour and atmosphere of Cornwall, many of the forms within his paintings deriving from the sea, fishing boats and floating buoys. However, Frost did not chose to depict his subjects literally and rather draw on his internal, emotional responses to these subjects in order to transform them into art. Cornwall and the Cornish communities had an enormous influence on Frost’s art throughout his life, however later in his career it was the moors of Yorkshire which provided inspiration for his paintings.

Like many artists, Frost’s style began to shift later in his career. His work of the 1960s is less restrictive in its compositions, freer in its brushwork and black and white canvas started to appear.
