Damien Hirst (Born 1965)

Home Sweet Home

Medium: Multiple of screen print on porcelain

Year: 1996

In 2001, Hirst’s “Home Sweet Home” works became a sensation during an exhibition at the Eyestorm Gallery in London when a janitor reportedly threw an edition of these plates in the trash mistaking it as an overflowing ash tray. The cigarette motif is a reoccurring image in Hirst’s work, as an exploration of the visceral, a theme which Hirst has explored and examined throughout his career. Hirst likens the act of smoking as representative of the cycle of life, from the spark of the match to the ash tray, or birth to death.
